Short 2yo - will he catch up?

My 2 yo is way below the height predicted based on parental height - he should be around 75th centile but is round 25th (about 8 cm difference I think) He's also quite thin, has been low on centiles since 3 months. I think he has a good diet, tho we don't eat meat, and he's still breastfeeding. Will he catch up with a spurt? or is he just going to be short compared to his parents? any experience? thanks!

how tall is he ?

dd666 · 02/01/2008 11:29

dd taller than she is heavy according to them charts me and her dad arent very tall so not expecting her to be as tall as she is she on 50th line for weight inbetween 50th/75th for height and has always been like that!

he's 83 cm, and he's just had a spurt! even 18-24 trousers are too big for him still.

dd 18mo is 81cm an doesnt fit 18-24mo clothes she can still fit in an outfit thats 6-9mo in size!
im not worried dont think you shoud be either one day he will tower you and you will wander why you was ever worried!
i have dd's height checked every 6weeks with hv as when other ppl hold her and say she really light she not very tall, my dn is bigger than dd and she 3mnths younger than her its not just taller its bulk aswell all children are different and aslong as he has a steadyish line of growth he will be fine!

I think it's impossible to say my nephew has always been on the small side but at 15 has shot up to about 5.10 and surpasses his older brother (mush to jis disgust). My neice on the otherhand has always been around the 25% percentile and at 20 is 5'3".

My DS at 2 is also 25% but as he was 3 months prem he probably still has some catching up to do.

Has he jsut turned 2? If so it sounds OK to me. DS2 is very small, but where as his siblings are on the 50th centile. I'm taking the veiw that there is nothing I can do about it. I feed him well, give him exercise, a good nights sleep, and hope for the best.

My dad was small at his age,but eventualy ended up an average height, but was always atheltic and skinny - do you have any short relatives?

gegs73 · 02/01/2008 21:12

i think he will probably catch up as he gets older. DS1 should be on the 99.6 centile for height using the height calcuation and he is only on the 75th. I'm guessing as he gets older he will have growth spurts which I remember happening to me and my brother too when we were both about 13/14.

my 3.3 year old wears trousers for 18-24 months and they are huge. the t-shirt she has on today is 12-18 (admitedly a bit on the small side- but she wouldn't take no for an answer).
daughter no 2 is 18 months olds and is in 2-3 clothes. i think as long as they are healthy size will ballance out- no.1 has always been small and her little sister is going to tower over her (my brother is 6ft7 so she has genes for it)

Next clothes are just ridiculously large. Take no notice of their sizes.
