19 month old dd's weight - does this seem normal?

Hi, my dd is almost 20 months old. She was in hospital recently and they weighed her. She is 10.3 kilos which is 22.5 lbs. She is quite thin but the nurse said she is well within normal weight for her age. The thing that is bothering me is that she was this weight 5 months ago. I know children grow more slowly in their second year and that they thin out when they start to walk but shouldn't she have gained something in all this time? I spoke to the nurse and she checked her iron levels which she said were excellent and that she thinks dd is fine and not to worry. Can't help being a bit concerned though. She has gotten a lot taller so she is growing, just not filling out.

As long as she is developing normally and seems happy and alert, then this is absolutely fine.

I would find that dd1 would put on weight and develop a bit of a tummy, and then grow taller in the following three or four months, strrtching her out and she would lose her tummy again.

Hi, my ds (19mo) has not put any appreciable weight on for months and months - honestly he has maybe put on a pound in 4 or 5 months. He just gets taller with less tummy! He's been in the same size nappies for yonks.

I really wouldn't worry about it if she has been checked out and is ok.

Thanks for the replies.

Noname - do you mind me asking how much your ds weighs? I know every child is different but don't know any other kids dd's age so would be interested to know. Thanks

ds2 is 22 months and has weighed 21 lbs for as long as I can remember (at least 6 months). He is getting much taller so I know is growing! He eats erratically which indicates to me that he eats when he's hungry and doesn't when he's not. He's active and developing well.

Your dd sounds fine - don't worry!

Hi, he is 26lb but he is tall and very well built (from the side he looks like an old man with a beer belly!!) so is not a good comparison - ie he is easily the biggest of his peers at nursery. I think 22lb sounds perfectly fine.

My feeling is that they find their level and if they need fattening up their appetite will increase. Ds' appetite definitely waxes and wanes depending on whether he is going to have a growth spurt or not.
Hope that helps.

Hi, my ds is 16 months and he's exactly the same! Thank god it's not just him!!!

He weighs 21.3 and has put on 3 oz in 4 months - he's now in 9th centile and HV asked me to take him back in a month (jan 08) to see if he put anymore weight on. What will they do if he not put any on?

Im tempted to load him up on choclates, just so he might put some on.

Dont know if he's got loads taller though, how do you measure your kids? he is a poor eater and has very little appetite but eats well when he is hungry enough.

xx

Ds is a bit older at 2.5 but he really hasn't put on more than an ounce or two for 6 months or more. He eats a very healthy diet but a lot of fruit and veg which is great but not calorific.
Will be interested in what others say.

He weighs 26lbs so not a lot but then is only maybe 87cm.

If it helps my perfectly healthy happy 4.5year old dd weighs 28lb. My 20mth old dd weighs about 20lb. It doesn't matter as long as they are alert and happy. You would know if they were undernorished.
