2 year old saying he doesn't like/doesn't want Daddy

My son (3 in April) is going through a bit of a phase atm where he says "I don't like you/I don't want you/go away" to me or his dad. I get it occasionally from him (usually when I tell him no or discipline him) but he does it to my husband for no apparent reason a lot. It obviously really upsets him and sometimes he'll come home from work and that's all he'll get from our son 😕
We are going through a tough stage at the moment in our relationship (possible upcoming separation) but we don't argue around our son. I'm wondering if he's picking up on sadness or tensions between us, or if this is just a toddler thing?

Hi OP, I’d say this is fairly normal for their age- probably you are both more sensitive to it be use of your situation. It’s all about testing out reactions from adults xx
