Toddler won't hold my hand

Hi i just wanted to know if this is normal behaviour. I have a 21 month old who throws a temper tantrum anytime i try to hold his hand when we are out walking. I'm not trying to force it and i do let him walk alongside or a bit in front of me but im worried when we cross roads, he also likes to try and hide in neighbouring gardens. Is it normal for kids of a similar age to do the same? I do worry as he will hit my hand away, start screaming and sit on the floor. He also has times when he starts hitting his own head and i worry this may be part of an autistic trait. I may be massively overthinking this but he just doesnt like to be lifted, hugged or anything.. very very rarely. I guess my question is, is this normal?

Mine didn't at that age. It was almost embarrassing. Now at three he loves to hold hands and will take my hand himself.
