Any other 2 year olds not walking yet?

My lovely 2 year old DS still is not walking yet, he is under under physio and has made progress but it very very bendy.

It feels like he is the only 2 year old in my town that is not walking, so just want to see if I'm not alone and whether there are any other 2 year olds that are not walking yet?

You definitely won't be the only one. Has he been referred to a Paediatrician as well @Greencouch?

Greencouch · 15/01/2022 19:44

Yeah he is currently in the process of being referred, I've been assured by 2 different physios (went private whilst waiting for an nhs appointment) that he will walk as he is showing all the pre-walking skills but there are some days where I just don't believe he will just get up and walk. Doesn't help that every baby/toddler group we go to he is the only child his age or near his age that is not walking. He is a happy little soul but inside I'm so disheartened for him as I know what he is missing out on.

He'll get there, my DSis didn't walk until she was nearly 2.5 and she's doing perfectly fine as an adult. Don't think it's a question they ask at job interviews Smile

How's his speech doing? Is he on track with that?

Greencouch · 15/01/2022 21:40

His speech really isn’t there (which is another reason why he is being referred to paediatrician) my older DD Was a really later talker and had speech therapy, she is doing wonderful Now so I’m not too worried about his speech at the moment.

Good to know your DS walked and is doing fine now :) I know once he starts walking around all this worry and anguish will be a distance memory but at the moment it feels like all consuming worry :(

@Emtaso86 it's unlikely that the OP will see your post as the thread is so old. You could try an @ Wink

Hi,

Yes my DS is walking now, he started walking confidently about 2 months after his 2nd birthday. He had weekly physio which really helped and lots of swimming, soft play and encouragement.

He turns 3 in March and if you met him now you wouldn't think he was a late walker. There are some things he still isn't confident with like walking down the stairs and jumping but I've been told that will come.

Things i found really helpful were: sitting my ds on a step and getting him to stand from sitting was really good, get a toy she really wants so she reaches for it to encourage her to stand, making a small step (like a few inches) to step up on helped with his balanced. If you have any toys where she can stand and play (like a tall garage or on a stand) put the thing she wants on the floor so she has to bend down to get it, or put 2 chairs quite away from each other and place a toy on one chair and encourage her to walk to the toy, when she does that move the chairs abit further away. Sorry I'm babbling abit so I hope this all makes sense.

Really hope your little one starts walking soon!

@Greencouch thank you so much for your help and advice. You are not babbling. I appreciate all the things you have talked about. I am just so desperate for my daughter to walk. It really gets me down. The GP has referred us today to the hospital so lets see what they can offer. Its such good news to hear how well your son is doing. 🤗

Really hope your little one starts walking soon!

It's so hard watching other children run around and then see your child sitting there not being able to join in, espec when you have other parents (with all the best intentions) say 'oh they will walk in their own time', really use to make me angry inside!

Hi @Emtaso86! Sorry for just jumping in on this post but my little girl will be 2 at the start of April and is not yet walking either. She has been referred to paeds but we were told it’s a long wait but she has a physio appt actually this Wednesday so keen to see how she will get on at that. But it is a very worrying time isn’t it?

Oysterbabe · 09/01/2023 09:09

My DD didn't walk reliably until 2. There was no reason for it, her super cautious personality I think. Her brother was born a week before her 2nd birthday and she just started walking everywhere from that day.

Emtaso86 · 09/01/2023 20:20

Hey everyone. I must say it does get me down and I am worried. I try to be strong but then I will take my daughter out for example to the library and she is off bum shuffling everywhere and the looks she gets from people breaks my heart because although she turns 2 in Feb she looks alot older for her age because of her height!

We have seen an nhs physio who was not helpful at all and then we paid for a private one who gave us a few exercises (very expensive!) My daughter gets frustrated with the exercises 🙃. We have an appointment on Thursday with a Dr at the Childrens Hospital...I hope he can help! 🥲

Elisemp93 · 01/07/2023 22:43

Hi @Emtaso86 how did you get on in the end? My LG is 2 and not yet walking but is bum shuffling. When did your daughter start bum shuffling? Thanks!

eliz20 · 02/07/2023 09:40

Hey…she started walking in March so about 2 weeks before she turned 2! She went to 2 physio sessions (referred by her Health visitor). The physio gave us a few simple things to practice at home. And the day of her second session she just took off that afternoon. I honestly couldn’t believe it!! She is flying now. She actually never bum shuffled, she used to crawl and then always walked about on her knees lol although my eldest girl never really crawled she just always bum shuffled and walked when she was 17 months. My third baby is 14 months and he has just started walking this week, they are all so different!! Has your little girl been referred for physio or anything?
