Help baby HATES car seat

Please help!
My baby (5 months) hates car seat and has done since birth but every week it’s becoming worse and worse.
I have tried:
my husband or me sitting in the back with baby
Toys to distract
Sun shade
Music on
Everything trust me and nothing works!
Baby is totally hysterically crying and gets in such a state where it takes such a long time to console baby when we arrive at destination. We are now at point where we can’t go anywhere because it’s not worth baby getting in such a state.
Note: my baby also dislikes pram however does tolerate for a lot longer than car seat.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you so much in advance Smile

Time. Was the only thing for my DS. Happy to sleep in car at ~ 8 months then was happy awake in car with snacks and CBeebies at ~ 13 months.

Thanks @AliceW89 unfortunately I think time is looking to be the only answer. I’m just hoping it’s not something more serious that I’m missing!

Totally agreed, time is the only thing really. Ours hated car seats until probably seven months ish.

Having said that it could also be the car seat, our Maxi Cosi Pebble was a cause of an awful lot of tears all round. Upgrading to a 0-4 year old car seat was a complete game changer but it does mean a fair bit of sitting in the car waiting for a small person to wake up as it's too bulky to take out of the car easily.

Mattieandmummy · 22/11/2021 18:38

If it helps the 0-4 seat was a Cybex, I should know which one but it's totally escaped me.

Mummy10197 · 22/11/2021 19:11

Thanks so much @Mattieandmummy I might just do that and invest in a 0-4 car seat. Anything is worth a try, I am desperate! He’s a big baby too so maybe our car seat is just too uncomfortable / small albeit it is supposed to be newborn to 1 year.

Does he take a dummy? My DS was the same but the introduction of a dummy when he was in his car seat helped.

Mummy10197 · 25/11/2021 04:18

@Moo31 thank you - yes but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to help either

Not what people would say and not a forever option but we traveled without. We went on holiday and my son (3m then) was hysterical in car seat. I took him out and that was it. I know it's not an option in terms of safety etc. and you need someone in the back with them but for us, for short city journeys that was the answer. He is 2 now and he sits in a car seat (forward facing) no problem.

My LO was similar, cried in the car seat and the pram. What helped with the car seat was to put it in the front seat with me, she was a lot calmer after that.

Oh I know the feeling. I remember the amount of times I had to pull up on the motorway parking lanes to comfort my lo but now he is 2.5 and still hates car seats but I give him plenty of snacks and the iPad with peppa pig and he just about tolerates it. I had to forward face him at 16 months as motion sickness kicked in as well and it made it just a little bit better as he could see me and see forward as well, not that I'm suggesting you do that now obviously but as pp have mentioned, in time it will get better.
