Omeprazole baby side effects - worried!

Hi lovely mumsnetters, I recently posted about my babys issues with reflux/digestion. We have had him on omperazole, and about 2 days ago took him off it as he started having a rumble in his stomach while feeding and is having very wet poos during feeding, the discomfort of it is stopping him from feeding properly. He poos about 10 times a day. I'm really worried this is because of the medication, has anyone experienced similar? He is not very happy at all

Hi,

Just read your post and didn't want to leave without commenting. I read your previous post and my son who is 16 months now went through the exact same thing. We found omeprazole was too strong even though he was on the lowest dose he would suffer with horrible tummy pains. He began to drink milk well but when the pains kicked in that was it. He stopped milk all together at 8/9 months. He only ever took the bottle in his sleep probably because the pain of the reflux and medication was so bad. It was a real struggle but now he is thriving. Maybe check with your GP if another medicine can be prescribed if its not suiting your little one? Good luck x

Thank you so much for your reply! Glad your little one is doing better. He has been off the medication for a week now and the symptoms have gone so must be linked! Did anything else help with yours or was it a case of him growing out of it? x

Thats ok Smile keeping feeds smaller and often helped as if they are too full then milk is bound to come up and irritate them especially with their immature digestive systems. Also feeding in a sitting position. Whatever you do don't feed them in their sleep. Thats where i went wrong with mine. His reflux was so painful that i would try to sneak the bottle in while he is sleeping and as soon as he woke he would stop drinking. I think thats what put him off the bottle and milk all together at 8 months. But now he is thriving once he was weaned, i weaned him at 5 months he took to his food very well and the reflux went. Good luck hang in there it will get better x
