12mo is this normal or should I be worried

My baby has just turned 12mo, she doesn’t say any words or walk yet.
Nothing that I would confidently say ‘yes that’s her first word’ she babbles a lot and in recent weeks her babbling sounds like she is talking rather than the bababa dadadad the sounds are now all mixed up and it’s all day long rather than here or there, she makes sounds in respond to things but it’s the lack of actual words which worries me as the HV on the check suggested she should have 3 words.

She doesn’t respond to her name particularly well and not at all if she’s playing but she points, claps and waves well. She will point out things like a plane or a dog and will respond to where’s or head/tummy/nose correctly if she feels like it, she will point to the door/light/mummy when asked where things are but she’s not talking....or walking. And I’m just not sure if she’s delayed.

She cruises around and will walk with a walker or holding someone’s hands but can’t stand alone or walk yet.

Do I need to worry?

Probably someone else can give you a more educated answer but I would say no don't worry. Lots of babies don't have words at 12m. I worried about my son's speech and was told the benchmark is 6 words by 18m. He also wasn't pointing at 12m.

Totally normal. Don't worry. You will see rapid change in the coming months.

If you're worried at all @theresaplaceforus, iCan have this useful 12 month progress checker here which should help allay any fears Smile

Thank you - sometimes I feel like she’s doing fine and then others I just go into a panic

Hi @theresaplaceforus can you please update how your little one is getting on? Xx

theresaplaceforus · 27/05/2024 19:39

Hi @Mumof3bb1 of course my daughter is now 3.5 she’s wonderful! She talks NON stop! She started walking confidently at 15 months and was talking fairly well by 2. She could confident name all her colours and count to 20 by 22 months so her progress was very still and then all of a sudden it just took off which I think is normal and I was just a first time mum panicking.

At 3.5 she can count backwards and forwards and recognise numbers to 20, knows all her colours and shapes including pentagon/hexagon etc and can draw them or have a go a go at it, she draws people pretty well too.
Her speech is good for the most part, she is a little less willing with letters and can recognise her name and about 15 letters/sounds I’d say. We are working on writing her name she can do the first letter so far! I think this is all within the range of normal.

But most importantly she’s loved, happy, kind to other children.
