Speech disorder?

Hi everyone, my little boy is 2 years 8 months and has been referred to our local developmental centre for an autism assessment but we have yet to see anyone and have been told there is a long wait for appointments.

My sons speech is extremely delayed, we currently have had 2 sessions of speech therapy via zoom with the NHS and also previously paid for private speech therapy however I think my son was too young at the time but are looking to start it up again.

He has a few words but these aren’t very clear and he doesn’t pronounce the whole word so for eg

Milk/ drink/ book/ stuck - he makes a kkk noise
Train- ain
Van/ fan- an
Zoom- mmm noise
Green- eeee noise

I was wondering if anyone else’s child spoke similarly and if they were diagnosed with a speech disorder? I feel like there is something else going on aside from the suspected autism but I just don’t know what.

Thank you x

If he's already being assessed for ASD you might get a few more responses if you post in the SN section Thanks

Honestly, what you are describing sounds like possible apraxia of speech. There’s a Facebook group with like 30k people on it if you’re interested, the moms on there can give great advice

Thank you both, can u tell me the name of the group xx

It’s called: Apraxia kids: official support group

There’s loads of mold on there whose kids aren’t actually diagnosed but have been suspected or they suspect themselves so people post on there a lot asking for insight. It’s a great group

Definitely meant moms not mold

My son has Developmental language Disorder. Have a google and see what you think. He didn't speak much until he was 3 1/2-4 and he was assessed for ASD due to the lack of communication, flapping, screeching and frustration. A good speech and language therapist will be aware of DLD. It's really common but not very well known.

@Toffeecoffeee hi, hope you don't mind me bumping this thread, your little one sounds a lot like my own and I am just curious as to how you're getting on now? Hope you're both doing well Xx

Hi!!!

shes 3 now and it worked out completely fine. All of sudden between 2-2.5 she exploded and her only speech issues are age-appropriate errors. I mean it’s crazy how stressed I was (it’s not to be when you have a little one) but as time went on she totally blossomed with her speech. How old is your little one?

I have a son who is 18 years old tomorrow. What you describe reminds me of what he was like as a toddler. It could possibly be Verbal Dyspraxia. Just wait and see what the developmental centre say. He was diagnosed by a Speech Therapist though.
