Difficulties settling at nursery

My DS (just turned 3) started at nursery in Sept, 5 mornings a week. He's having real difficulty settling in - tears every morning, asking 'you will pick me up' over and over and over again, not joining in/playing with other kids while at nursery, persistently asking the teachers if its 'group' time (which precedes the end of the session). I know he's a very sensitive soul but he has mixed with other children since he's been a baby and once his confidence is up, he's very outgoing.
Is anyone else going through something similar, or is my little one unusually anxious? WOuld love to hear others experiences...
Also he had a very stressful experience at a day care/nursery when he was 10 months old (he was in there for a month before I pulled him out, after which time he had a nanny and I'm wonderng if this could have scarred him?

have you gone in to the sessions with him

what do the teachers say?

Sounds like quite a long while to not have settled to me?

Have you considered trying another nursery? I have a friend who had a similar reaction with her DD, and apparently it was due to the constant staff rotation at the nursery. But... her DD was only 1 year old.
