20 month old and starting with tantrums

In the last few weeks my DD has started to tantrum and I really don't know how to deal with it.
She started by lying on the floor quite peacefully but it has now moved up to full blown screaming and headbutting the floor. If I try to pick her up she gets violent and starts hitting me & DP, she'll even go and find something to bite if she's very angry.
DD hasn't been well and has bad nappy rash at the moment so I usually check her nappy as soon as this behaviour starts but it is making nappy changes a nightmare. I try distracting her with toys but this tactic doesn't work.
I really want to work out some consistent way of dealing with it that DP can use too.
I am pregnant and fairly exhausted so any advice on this would be very much appreciated as I'm starting to feel like a terrible mother and I don't have long before the next one arrives

o'h lucy you poor thing. any chance thre's anything to do with the imminent arrival of a new lo?

ds is 16 months and has the most terrible tantrums - dh just laughs at him and it normally stops although this is not a long term approach i know.

cna't be much help just wanted to say hang in there!

Thankyou! My mum said to try ignoring them whilst my sister said to pop her in her cot for a while, I'll probably give them both a go!
