Highly defiant child

I have a very defiant 8 year old son. I continuously think something has gone wrong with my parenting. Friends suggest things but nothing works with him, or it's temporary. People don't understand what it's like having a child who doesn't take no for an answer, just doesn't listen, shrugs his shoulders to any consequence, doesn't learn from his actions, laughs at discipline and constantly moans and demands things. He has lying down crying fits. I try and remain calm and ask him nicely but I admit on the fifth time of asking I get shouty when I am ignored. His 6 yo sister seems to be going the same way and they both seem to think this lack of respect is ok. He gets rewards, books, praise, consequences, stars, pocket money and behaviour has improved but I am so worn down by him. It's an endless struggle and I feel very disrespected. Anyone have child like this who turned it round as they got older.

I’m following this as it sounds like my 4 year old. The past couple of weeks have been horrific. He’s grumpy, defiant and just wants his own way with everything. I’m putting it down to a combo of a phase, late nights and sleeping in the car which is a vicious cycle and summer meaning a lack of routine. Although I’m dreading the fall out from full time school.

No advice I’m afraid, but I feel your pain x

Thanks, people just don't understand what it's like I think. Hopefully yours is just a phrase, I was hoping the same for my ds and was thinking he would grow out of it but now he's nearly 9 I think it's his personality.
