Feeding

Hi. My DD is 8 weeks old and is having difficulties feeding. She initially tried aptamil organic which worked ok initially but for the past 4 weeks she has been crying during feeding. She used to have half the bottle ok but then would cry. I would stop and burp her and she would cry to say she was hungry but then would stop feeding after a couple orf sucks and then would start crying again. We thought palm oil was making it worse so switched to Kendamil and gradually easing her into this by mixing one part aptamil and 3 kendamil. This seemed to help initially but seemed to have stopped. She just about managed 70/80ml and drinks every 3 hours. A week or so ago she was drinking at least 100ml. I have tried infacol which seemed to help the burping. She also falls asleep quickly during feeding and when try and wake her she started drinking about 10mls before falling asleep again. She arches her back and cries. She is also waking every 3 hours at night for the past few nights and she used to go 4:5 hours at night. I’m wondering if she has reflux or something else. What’s your experiences as wondered whether we should try another formula. Sneaks still in one month old clothes so she’s not gaining enough weight as she is meant to. She has an appointment with GP for 8 week check up this week. Any advice would be helpful!

Have you tried a faster teat? The flow could be too slow for her.

I have moved her onto MAM teat 2 which is 2 month onwards. It helped a little but I wouldn’t say it made a huge difference

@RA2021

I would definitely mention it your GP. DD is BF but we had a very short time on formula and had a similar issue at that age.

She was doing 3-4oz every 3-4 hours but I remember one day she drank 7oz in 24 hours. I was worried sick. She just used to scream as soon as she saw the bottle like she was scared of it, arch her back etc. HV said she was teething Hmm and some babies just drink less, midwife said she had nipple confusion and either wanted to be fully BF or fully FF...but I could tell she was in pain by her cry. I took her to the GP - was told it was probably heartburn and prescribed Gaviscon. We also changed to Kendamil from Aptimil Comfort (GP didn't advise this but we had heard good things). We also tried sizing up teats as Gaviscon thickens the formula but the faster flow just made things worse. I found Kendamil a lot thinner than Aptimil Comfort so size 1 worked fine even with the Gaviscon. Unfortunately the Gaviscon made her really constipated so we replaced one problem with another.

Things improved greatly but I have no idea whether it was because I went back to breastfeeding shortly after that all happened.

Hope that helps.

Have you read anything about Cow's Milk Protein Allergy OP? It could be that.

Mixing Dentinox in with the bottle may help if it's just wind Thanks
