Up until 2 months ago, my 2.5 year old DS was a quiet, smiley, sweet little boy. I’m now really concerned about his behaviour. We are seeing some extreme tantrums which at first I thought were just the “terrible twos” but over the last few weeks he has started to hurt me and occasionally DH (his dad). My arms are covered in bruises and scratches from him pinching, scratching and biting me during tantrums and he has occasionally hit me or pulled out some of my hair.
Today things have got more extreme when during a tantrum he ran full pelt across the room into a wall and banged his head. He now has a small lump on his head and the start of a black eye. About half an hour later he threw himself on the tiled kitchen floor and repeatedly banged his head against it. His forehead is now very bruised. I’m not even sure what caused these two tantrums - usually it’s triggered by him getting frustrated at something or if he’s stopped from doing something he wants to do but there didn’t even seem to be a trigger. He was screaming and crying while it was happening.
I am terrified he is going to do some real damage to himself. What do I do? Has anyone ever experienced this before? I don’t feel like it’s normal.
He had a delay in his gross motor skills (no concerns with this now) so he has a consultant that he sees 6 monthly at hospital as he now has a “mild speech delay” but all other areas of development are within normal range. This behaviour seems to have started since he began to say more and more words. His next appointment is in 3 weeks so I’ll discuss it then but I am thinking of contacting the health visitor tomorrow. Any advice please?
