Wetting herself whilst out - even though dd potty trained !

My dd is nearly 3 and at home is as good as good and I would say potty trained - no accidents. Before we leave home to go out anywhere I ask dd if she needs the toilet to which she replies "No" - as soon as I am stuck in traffic or along a main road dd suddenly decides that she wants to go "Now" - which always results in her wetting herself !! Does anyone have any tips pleeeeeeeeease as I am getting desperate !!!

How frustrating, bubsylocket. Perhaps try insisting she go to the toilet before you go out. I don't ask our dd anymore, I just tell her to go before we're out the door (or before bedtime). If she says she doesn't need to, I just tell her to sit anyway and "have a teeny tiny pee". More often then not, it's full flow! Also, if she says she has to go "now" then tell her calmly that you can't stop and she'll have to hold it. If she doesn't manage, I would also be very calm and say "oops, an accident - next time try harder" and eventually she should start gaining some capacity to hold it.

That's about all the tips I have - I'll bet she'll outgrow this, anyway, but doesn't help in the short term.

Definitely don't ask if she needs to go. Just put her on the potty/toilet before going out. We do use bribery in our house - a choc button works wonders!

Thanks Tartegnin - think I may try your method first as dd has been doing that today for me after lots of running around out and about !!! Hopefully (fingers crossed) - its true what you said about just by sitting on the toilet and they tend to go !!! I even done the running of the tap trick to go to the sound of it !!!!
