15 months. Turns out he had glue ear. He's 2 now, and his language his really developed very fast in the past few weeks. I think you're only supposed to worry when you get to 12m, so 8m is quite early.

my ds responded pretty early on but I think because everyone spent the whole time calling it out. You should be able to tell if her hearing is ok by making a noise near her out of her line of vision to see whether she reacts/flinches/turns. Ask you HV if you are worried though!

Dd started to recognise her own name at about 15 months I'd say. Maybe later. She recognised and responded to other words sooner - I think it depends on the name. My dd's name doesn't have any hard sounds in it and I think it got swallowed up in the general babble, whereas a word like 'cat' or 'dog' was easier to distinguish.

I think it's once they are around a year old, I think that 8 months is too early to worry. Agree with bodiddly - speak to GP or HV if concerned about her hearing.

Have an 11 month old and he's responded to me saying his name for 2-3 months.
Ds1 was 2-2.6 years, but then we'd call him anything but his name all the time so it wasn't until pre-school aged 2 that he regularly got called his proper name.

dd is 8 months and she has known her name for ages but she doesnt necessarily turn to see you, just gets a funny secret smile when you say it, quite cute. does your dd show other signs of recognising her name? my dd stops what she's doing for example to listen. dont know if its a worry at this age though, they are still so tiny arent they? did she have her initial hearing test as a newborn?

susiecutiemincepies · 25/11/2007 22:22

DD is 10 months. She has known her own name for many months now. Not sure when... maybe 6 - 7 months? But, she is also saying other words already, quite clearly. So i think her speech is just pretty ahead...

I'm sure that you'd know already if there were any problems with hearing already though. Does she respond to you talking in general to her? loud noises make her jump?

talk to your health visitor. She will ask you questions abot it at her 8 month check...
