Speech Therapy: When to Start?

My little boy will be two in two weeks and he's still saying very little (bye bye, no, cheese, tea, fish are about it!). At about 18 months I had concerns about ASD as we have it in our family but he's come a long way since then in terms of non-verbal communication and understanding of language. I have also seen two doctors who ruled out ASD.

Due to these concerns I saw a speech therapist for two sessions when he was 18 months old but she said that he was too young for speech therapy.

Is he still too young at two? When did you put your child in speech therapy if you did? Or did you regret not doing it earlier.

For reference in terms of child care, I look after him mainly and have a nanny two mornings a week so I can work from home. We had looked put him nursery but I pulled him out as I wasn't happy with the staff there. I'm now looking at different nurseries to start in September.

We can afford private speech therapy so I'm not worried about waiting lists etc.

I'm not a professional but I think 2 is usually ok. Id get a hearing test first though as most SLTs will want that done before seeing them.

This progress checker from Talking Point might be useful as well.

Thank you!! I should have said we have had a hearing test and his hearing is fine. The progress checker says we should seek help.

I thought it might, both of mine have required SLT and they've worked out ok Smile
