3 year old crying all day, non verbal

Hi

Our 3 year old son is non verbal, and for the last 2 weeks has been bursting out into tears randomly

Sometimes he will do this when his 1 year old sister comes up to him to play, and at other times if she screams out of excitement, he will start crying.

At first I thought it's definitely because he is afraid of her..when she's excited she will run up towards him and he freaks out. Now i'm thinking it's not just that because sometimes he will happily be playing and then randomly bursts out into tears.

Even though he can't talk yet, he has other ways of showing us what he wants but the last 2 weeks all he has been doing is wanting to be held..randomly crying, seems to be afraid of his sister and loud noises

I'm so exhausted i don't know what to do. He went to pre-school and they called us saying we might need to pick him up as he keeps crying. I feel so bad as i'm not spending any time with DD

Have you got any advice for me :(

If he's non-verbal at 3, it's probably worth self referring him fir a hearing test and some speech therapy.

My DD was pretty much Non-verbal up to 3 and speech therapy helped massively, although she had started talking by then.

It might be worth talking to Pre-School again and ask for some more information on how he is there and if they have any concerns as being non-verbal and not liking loud noises seem to be 2 indicators that they can have ASD.

@BunnyRuddington Sorry I should have mentioned speech therapy will be starting on 16th July so i'm hoping that will help

The health visitor rang back today and is coming over in 2 weeks after I told her the school also has concerns about all the things I previously mentioned i.e. no eye contact, sporadic hand movements, and how he will sit in one corner by himself and play with the same toy, can't wave, point or draw a line

Earlier we were enjoying nursery rhymes together and he randomly started crying after laughing and giggling.. I don't know what's triggering it sometimes

It's hard when they can't tell you as well isn't it? Thanks

I'm glad that he's getting SLT and that your HV is taking this seriously. Make sure she referred him for a Paediatric Assessment, I wouldn't take "let's wait and see" which can often be the approach.

It might be worth posting on the SN Boards as well. The MNers in there will have experience of the assessment process and might be able to shed some light on the crying.

Hope you get some help Thanks
