Baby sleeping too much… an indicator of future development?

Hi,

I’m hoping that hearing some of your experiences may help me understand what’s going on with my little girl.

She’s 2 months old and has slept sooo much since she was born and it worries me…

First month was at least 20 hours a day…generally more like 22.

She is awake more now, but still has lots of very sleepy days. Her weight gain has been ok, so midwives/HVs unconcerned. But everything I read suggests this is out of the normal range.

Has anyone had a very sleepy baby and is willing to share how they went on to develop?

Thanks in advance for sharing any stories x

It's really good that her weight gain is ok. Is she bright and alert at times? Are you having to wake her for feeds?

Hey,

Thanks for replying.

When she’s awake she’s super alert and lovely. Smiles, coos at us.

I’ve never quite had to wake her for feeds, she has always woken at 3 hours, sometimes sooner, even in the first days. Her feeds are very short though, and average just 5-10 minutes…

She sounds lovely. Try not to worry, as long as she is gaining weight as expected and is alert and engaged when she is awake I'd just chalk it up to having a sleepy baby.

Did she come early? DS2 was born at 37+5 so not remotely premature but was very sleepy for the first 3-4 months. So much so I even started a thread on here about it. It was in stark contrast to DS1 who slept about 2 hours during the daytime from day 1!!

DS2 is now 7 months and sleeps a very typical amount for his age. Things only changed recently though and up until 6 months he would still have very sleepy days. I miss it now ha.

Thank you.

She wasn’t early. Thanks for sharing about your little boy though; reassuring to hear his sleep is within the “appropriate” range now.

Hope your bigger one sleeps a bit more now too!

@Minato my little one (now 5 months) was exactly the same and I too was very worried and mentioned it to everyone I could. All a waste of energy and time as she’s lovely, meeting all her milestones and still loves her sleep but just much less during the day. Enjoy it - we got lucky! x

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s tough isn’t it… when something feels “different” and you’re not sure if something is wrong.

I had a few challenges in pregnancy too, so just feel a bit more on edge about everything.

That’s fab that your little one is doing so well.
