How many of you out there with a toddler sleeps less than 12 hours in total a day?

I kinda half accepted this is just how DS2 (23 months) is. He's always way too alerted. No matter how I twist the routine (in an effort to make it right), if it happened to allow him sleep earlier/woke up later, he somehow always lose the hours of gained sleep elsewhere by waking up earlier or falling asleep late.

When he was younger , it was even worse, any tiny noise could wake him up in the middle of a nap.

There was about 5-6 weeks or so in laTe March, he was able to sleep 13 hours in total for a day. I thought that was a good pattern. But it didn't last. One day he went to nap later than usual, all got messed up.

In the term break, he slept less than DS1 (8yo), who got a solid 12 hours every night. And DS1 had always gotten 14 hours sleep when he was little.

I guess I will just have to accept this is the way he is naturally???

He does go to nursery every morning where they do outdoor activities everyday, so it's not that he didn't get enough exercise...

Mine has never slept the number of hours they are 'supposed' to in a 24 hr period. Currently manages 9-10 hours and sometimes sleeps through age 3. I am hope DC2 will take after me when he or she arrives and sleep lots!

My 19mo also barely manages to get 12 hours (13 if I am lucky). Does not sleep at nursery but will have a nap at home lunch time.

I was worried, then I said to myself - is he happy, not aggressive, not grumpy or distressed or otherwise? If yes, then he is just not a child that fits the "tables" and off he is. If he wakes up too soon or gets unhappy in the evening I just put him to bed at 6pm and that sorts things out.

His sister is very new but god does she sleep like 20 hours a day and that is pure bliss.

My wee one has also never read the instructions on how much babies and toddlers are supposed to sleep. She's a little younger than your boy, and 10ish hours overnight and a 1-1.5 hour nap are the norm here. She's happy, full of beans, and developing well, so that's just her. We've found it's easier (i.e., we spend far less time trying to get her to fall asleep) if we just accept that's her natural pattern and go with it.
