6 month old struggling with tummy time

By wee guy hates tummy time and he looks like he really struggles to keep his head up. He lasts around less than a minute each time and he screams/cries until I roll him over. He's great at sitting up however and does need a little support. Should I be worried or do some babies just not like tummy time?

Hi @Lunardreams

I worked for years at a nursery in the baby room and it's quite common for babies not to like tummy time! The grumpy ones all went on to develop well, at their own pace, with no problems. Hope that is reassuring Smile

Both my DDs hated it . So I didn't bother in the end ! They're both fine.

Lots of babies hate tummy time so don't worry about that. You can work the same muscles by carrying him forward facing in a sling. Or try tummy time on your tummy, so lie down and place him on his tummy on you and sing/rub his back/tickle him etc.

I would speak to your HV if he can't roll and has trouble lifting his head at 6 months though. It's almost certainly fine, but no harm in getting him checked out.

My DD absolutely detested tummy time! I was so worried she wouldn't learn to hold her head up and sit etc - she used to just face plant the ground and scream. It was awful.
She is the later side of normal with gross motor skills, which may be. A result of tummy time or because she's 99th centile and chunky. Fantastic fine motor skills though!
But she's getting there - 17 months now and she started walking last month but is still cautious and likes a lot of handholding. Excellent climber and fiercely independent and still a speedy little crawler.
I would reach out to HV who was great at reassuring me when I was worried
