My ds is 2.2 and has only just started to copy the odd word.Hes got a hearing test soon but im not worried about his hearing at all.Ive four other kids at home and everyone says its because of the noise level in the house but i always have quiet time with him when the others are at school.Im getting really worried now,has anyone got any advice or experience on this,id be very grateful.

My cousin's youngest (of 6) was quite slow to talk and she too was worried about her hearing. Tests revealed nothing and now aged 6 she doesn't shut up! We decided that perhaps it was quite simply because there were plenty of other people around to say what she wanted for her!

I think your theory about the noise in the house is a good one, too.

Actually, now I think about it, my nephew will be 3 in December and he shrieks a lot but says little (although he's a very smiley, happy little chappy). SIL says it's because he "speaks" 3 languages, but sis and I reckon (behind her back, of course!) that he's just a bit slower than average (can you tell we're not that fond of SIL?!)

I'm sure he'll be ok, Shiny, but do let us know the results of the test.

my ds is 2.6 and only started copying words not so long ago he will be undergoing SALT still doesnt start coversation but can now say basic wods so we can communicate i know how worrying it can be

he has just been given a nursery placemant 2 days a week starts monday so hoping this will help him

maybe its because all other dc speak for him he doesnt need to ask for things start offering him choices milk or water so he has to say something other than yes or no

also when offering fruit or anything do you want orange or banana look at the lovely round orange and so on

someone else gave me this advise and it worked you get used to repeating your self when you see them make the effort

i have a thread on here with lots of good advise on also give him amega 3 oil every day now

i'm sure he is just like my ds hearing test was good has to have another check at 3 but if we know what they want then they dont need to ask so its a case of just offering choices with everything red pyjamas or blue pyjamas etc

if he is copying words now then he must be hearing them my ds wouldnt copy words untill 2.5 and really is making great progress

good luck

My friends youngest (one of four) was late to talk - 2 1/2 etc due to the fact that she didn't need to as all the family knew what she wanted or just spoke for her. Give him lots of opportunities to speak for himself.

shiny1 · 09/11/2007 14:29

Thanks for all your comments ,i think youre all probably right ,we all talk for him and respond to his every need.

Many children are late talkers and it all resolves by the time they are 3, but I would speak to HV, and consider getting onto SALT waiting list now (they can be up to a year) in case things don't improve. In the meantime
some useful websites about speech/encouraging speech are:-

www.ican.org.uk
www.afasic.org
www.hanen.org

A VERY good book on the issue of speech problems, and when to just wait and see or when to worry is this:-

Hope it helps,Shiny.(DD has a global delay and is nearly 2.She says ca and car and mumumuma, thats all.)Recently found she has glue ear too.The SALT has suggested Makaton signing to aid her non verbal skills too.It may just be that your LO needs a bit more time or has a slight hearing loss. The fact that he is copying words is good.Hope you see some progression soon.

bubblagirl · 12/11/2007 20:04

you can call local snap centre and take your son now they deal with speach delay my ds 2.6 has started nursery today so hoping now that will bring him along i have had long wait for salt still 4 more weeks been 6 months now

there are many things you can do at home have had a therapist come to help as have had a long wait and this is crucial time for my ds lots of choices never finish sentence when given something say thank you mummy

offer water or milk, what book spot or bob for example something he has to answer it is tiring trying to remember to do this within 4 weeks my ds was copying everything i was saying still not talking in conversation but will now answer any choice given his words have more than doubled GOOD LUCK

also repeating nearly everything helps them too yellow banana round green apple etc it does work

bubblagirl · 12/11/2007 20:08

wrinklytum i have a dvd of makaton signs i could copy this for you and send it to you if you want my ds also has speech delay glue ear is most common my ds just has delay by sound of things no glue ear but the repeating does work all day every day has bought my ds on wonders never make them copy you but just make it fun and they will try

not sure if allowed to offer copied dvd but they are so expensive i should say i could back the dvd up and send you my back up

your ds is doing more than my ds did at that age he was at least 2.4 with a range of words but not putting words together not all words are pronounced great but its the effort made he would not copy anything untill literally few weeks a go now every day he tries to copy whatever i'm saying so it has been a long haul

your ds does sound like he is doing good if he keeps this up could be fine within few months my ds wasnt doing that at that age wouldnt do anything stubborness i think lol

just do the repeating every day and the choices dont give him anything without a choice then he has to answer you since ive been doing this he has been doing fab

he cant pronounce certain letters b f and s so good boy is good goy but its music to my ears lol thats what the therapy will be for to help with that the fact he is now copying it has taken so much worry off me as he just would not put words together would not say anything over night with what we were doing switch went on every day copies more and more

he will get there bless him keep me informed with how he is doing as i know how your feeling also if they attempt to say something you say thats right for example boy = goy well done for trying to say boy never correct just repeat the word as it should be said praise makes them want to do more xx

shiny1 · 13/11/2007 19:31

sounds like hes really coming on now ,hope he keeps it up,let me know, its great to talk to someone who is going through similar worries xx

oh god 4 weeks ago i was posting out my mind with worry next day ds wouldnt say anything at all this went on for 2 days began to panic terribly next morning copying everything i was saying just like that i could not believe it

it was like he took 2 days to absorb everything then my gosh no stopping his efforts now still along way off no real conversations but i'm getting answers and that is so good lol

yeah anytime if you want to talk i'm here dont know anyone on here have been member for short while but still dont know anyone so always nice to have someone in same situation to talk too x
