3 year old keeps running into the road

Desperately need help. My 3, almost 4 year old, keeps running on the road. I've tried everything and nothing works. I pick him up from nursery and all the other kids are walking with their parents happily, my son throws himself onto the floor if I try to grab his hand, he always runs away from me and ALWAYS into traffic. I hate taking him places because I'm terrified something will happen to him. I want to trust him, but I can't.

Have you ever watched supernanny? I don't love all her ideas but I basically use her technique with my 2YO. She can walk ahead of me slightly but I explain that this is on the condition that she must stop if I tell her to. If she ignores me then she walks the rest of the journey holding my hand or goes in a stroller. It's simply not safe at all for a child to run into a road. If he can't figure that out then he needs to stay restrained simple as. There really is no alternative.

Thank you for your advice, I'll definitely be trying that technique. Hopefully it will work, we've run out of ideas now.

Put reins on - I had twins who went in different directions. I know some people hate them but they work and if it's a choice between reins and the road I know what I'd go for.

Thanks for the advice:) i will give reins another go. I tried them a few months ago and I was literally dragging him along the floor, he hated them. But he's a lot faster now, so it's more dangerous now. I'll try them again thanks :)

I would be getting the pushchair out and say if he can’t walk safely he will have to go in it.

Unfortunately he doesn't fit in a pushchair anymore :( He's only 3 but most people think he's about 5 or 6 because he's really tall.
