sleeping on side

Hiya,

We've got a lovely 1 week old girl who we've just discovered loves sleeping on her side. Just wondered if this is ok (and safe) for her to do at night time when we go to bed (she is in moses basket next to us)?

We have one of those bolster things that wedge them so maybe this would be good to use if we were to let her stay on her side?

Any advice very welcome!

Thanks!

I believe the advice is that back is best, sleeping on side is not so good but better than front.
I think that's what I was told by my health visitor. ds2 also loved to sleep on his side and did so from a few days old, (like yours in a moses basket next to our bed).
Don't really know about the bolster, I used to roll up a blanket and turn him a bit so his back was leaning on it.

No matter what the 'current' guidlines are, your baby will sleep how they want. From a few hours old ds slept on his side wih his hand under his cheek, and is asleep like that at this moment (6.5mths.

My dd2 slept on her side from the start, wedged as you say...she seemed to breathe better that way, settled better, and it just felt right (dd1 had slept on her back no problem). A few weeks later I found out she had laryngomalacia, and when she had a week in hospital they actually nursed her on her front - again, it was easier for her. Of course, she was on monitors etc so it was ok there - back home, we went back to side sleeping.

She's nearly 1 now, and if she falls asleep in my arms I still put her down on her side - she tends to turn onto her front during the night
