Pointing with just one hand

Hello everyone Smile
I’m looking for some help. My wife suffers from health anxiety following the birth of our daughter. I won’t get into those details but were slowly making progress and she’s getting a lot better.

Anyway, one thing that’s kind of been a bit of a hurdle for her (and she’s refusing to google to her credit) is that our daughter who is 9 months old only seems to point with her right hand. Now, just to be clear, she’s developing really well, incredibly well and i couldn’t be happier. She’s achieved all her milestones, is happy and healthy and we’re very lucky. It’s been a bit of a journey because my wife cares so much about her that she’s constantly in a state of worry that something is wrong and the pointing issue seems to be distracting her away from enjoying our daughter.

The reason I’m asking on here is because I wanted to know whether anyone else has experienced this? I would say that she shows very good dexterity with both hands but my wife seems to think she is better with her right. Now I would disagree, she can pick up raisins with both hands, she even picked up a hair from the floor (gross I know) with it the other day no problems either.

I suppose the question I’m asking is not just if it’s normal for her to use one hand but why?

Appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my questions, I’ve always used the forum to look through and get tips as I’m sure a lot of parents too so thank you. Star

Hello, sorry to regurgitate but I was just wondering if anyone had experienced this or had any advice on whether it is normal behaviour?

Pointing at 9M old? that is extremely advanced, it usually appears between 12-18M of age. However I fail to see why her preferring to use one hand over other to point would be concerning? specially as she has shown ability using both hands....

I'm not sure whether she's worried that she's pointing whole handed or pointing preferring her right hand. Neither is concerning anyway. My dd pointed whole handed with mostly her right hand (I think) at 9MO. She didn't progress to finger pointing until around 14MO which I think is fairly typical. Her physical and language skills now at almost 3 are if anything slightly ahead. She understands everything, talks in long sentences, can hold a pen properly and starting to draw simple pictures and the first letter of her name. Tell your wife not to worry. She sounds lovely. Enjoy her xx
