Terrible 3's????

My DD is just over 3 years. We managed the terrible 2's pretty well but her behaviour this past month is awful / embarrassing 🙈

Her speech is delayed so not sure if there's a link. She can talk but she's probably be closer to an average 2.5 yo rather than a 3 year old.

She's not obeying instructions, running off in the park, dancing around when I'm trying to get her ready to go out, poor concentration when doing an activity (previously she's been much better behaved)

Can anyone recommend a website or a book so we can brush up on our parenting technique to try and iron this out?

She's due to start nursery school and I don't want her to be behaving like this there!

If her speech is delayed, I'd concentrate on this first, it will help her behaviour and help her settle into Nursery. Is she seeing a SLT and gave you had her hearing checked?

Thanks for your reply. Yes she's been referred to SALT after an assessment. Mild understanding & moderate speech issues. Her hearing has been checked and there's no issue there. She hasn't had any therapy yet as were waiting for an appointment to come through after the initial assessment. Lockdown has understandably slowed everything down.

When I met with her nursery school teacher before Christmas she said quite a few parents had commented on speech delay and they think it'll be common with lockdown. Hopefully as more things open up that will help. The school have sent some homeschool activities so it's great to have new ideas and she's really enjoying doing these and showing them to her dad when he gets home from work & talking about them.

I'll definitely check out the book. I used the oh crap potty training book a couple of months ago and it worked well. It helped with understanding the how her brain was interpreting everything.

Hopefully her behaviour is just another phase but I want to nip it in the bud ASAP

That all sounds really normal to me and bear in mind kids are always super well behaved at nursery compared to how they act at home. However there are things you can try to change the dynamic between you and your daughter. I massively recommend the Whole Brain Child book and Janet Lansbury's articles and podcasts if you want anything to read. Thank you. Only just saw your post as my notifications seemed to have turned themselves off.

Funnily enough her behaviour has been much better the past few days and pretty much can't fault her today...

I think I really need to be on top of when her behaviour isn't acceptable, how to deal with it and to make sure my DH is following the same process.
