DS (nearly 4) can't keep his hands off himself atm.
I have tired explaining that it is something he can do when by himself but not around others.
Is that an acceptable route to go down? What else can I say?

Of course am only posting on here because my first strategy hasn't worked...

Well, a few days later, and I've found that slapping his hand sharply and screaming "Percy Filth!" has done the trick.

pruners, we tell ds that his penis is private. his body is beautiful and he is more than entitled to touch it however he wishes to, but that his penis is private and therefore he shouldn't get it out in public.

now, this has backfired a bit as he doesn't like his teachers helping him wipe is bottom as it is private. but we talked to him and them about it and now he is fine (and well on the way to wiping his own thank god).

i think, obv, you don't want to instill any sense of shame. equally, he needs to understand that fiddling in public is socially unacceptable (and that is all, it is just a social rule, nothing more nothing less).

No, everything you say is right. He says "What's private?" and (despite being an ex-Eng Lang teacher) I find it hard to put it into words that don't have a whiff of shame about them. Because he asks "Why?" a lot.

I tried saying "People don't want to see you doing that" and he just said "But I am doing it for me" - gloriously unfettered ego...

Ds2 (almost 6) went through a stage of humping everything - the arm of the sofa, the floor, cushions, my leg...he was like one of those horrid little dogs.

I tried distraction, cajoling, threatening, bribery, ignoring, reasoning and explaining. I think I tried everything.

He grew out of it (well, almost - he only really does it now when he's tired).

He probably did it at nursery and, no doubt, at school - I try not to think about that too much (ds2 humping the teacher's leg while she is trying to read a story...)

'what's private?' 'private is for when you are on your own or just in our family at home' (we walk round naked, have baths together etc).

don't think that instills shame. and it is an answer.

My DS (4) cannot keep his hands to himself...I have told him that all boys play with their willies, but that he shouldn't do when other people are there.

He did go through a stage of pulling his foreskin back and we had to get quite tough with him and tell him that he could get an infection if he didn't stop.

So, occasionally I still catch him with his hand down his trousers and if I reprimand him, he just says "But, mummy it went really hard" - what can I say ? He is quite good, but it makes me smile when I go to tuck him in at night he hand is firmly down the front of his PJ's - my DH says it's a security thing.
