7.5 month old - tummy time

My DD has always hated tummy time but I’ve always persisted with it - I’ll do it a few times a day for as long as she lasts.

She learned to roll from front to back at around 5 months (still can’t roll back to front though) but now whenever I put her on her tummy she just ‘superman’s’ and starts screeching. Even if I put her arms back in front of her, she put them behind again.

She now won’t roll over even though she can and she doesn’t push up on her arms either.

I’ve attached a pic (a screenshot from a video so apologises for bad quality) so you can see what I mean.

For reference she was born 4 weeks early (but only weighed 3lb 9oz) and has reflux, which is why she probably hates tummy time!

Is this normal?

They all do these little odd things to throw us. Have you tried putting a baby mirror or toy in front of her to distract her?

Vicky1989x · 28/12/2020 19:07

@JingleJohnsJulie I’ve tried everything! Toys, mirror, my phone... I even bought one of those water tummy time mats but she still does the same thing. She’ll ‘superman’ then screech Grin

You have my sympathy. Both of mine hated tummy time, DS in particular. Both seem to be fully functioning teens. I'd try not to worry too much Smile

@JingleJohnsJulie I’m trying not to worry but people keep saying ‘oh she should be doing this, doing that’ etc. I’m sure she’ll do it in her own time though Smile

My 4month old also hates tummy time. I’m not been able to give her much tummy time as she has also had reflux so just throws up ! I did find a few articles on other alternatives to tummy time and things to do to encourage the movement and muscle development for rolling. My DD shows no sign of rolling atm.

SETRu83 · 29/12/2020 16:44

I’m going to try some of these, not sure if it’s going to work !

Will she tolerate lying on her tummy on your chest? My little boy loves it because I pull faces at him and it’s like stealth tummy time. Also having her in a carrier can help to build up those muscles.

Vicky1989x · 29/12/2020 20:22

@SETRu83 I’ve tried all of those - hasn’t worked for my DD but may for yours! Reflux is awful, so I don’t blame them for not wanting to be on their tummies.

@Lolalovesmarmite Nope! She hates being on her tummy period - she’s just a moody little madam lol! She doesn’t like the carrier either. She is almost sitting unaided though so hoping that helps her muscle strength.
