Toddler doesn't hold on to me

When I'm carrying my DD she doesn't grip onto me with either her hands or legs. She's 16 months. It's like carrying a dead weight and she sort of leans back a little and her arms are a bit out but behind her. Is this something that comes with age - like when she's old enough to understand me asking "hold onto mummy"? Or is it just her personality?

It makes carrying her, my handbag, laptop bag and her day bag out to the car park very difficult in the morning!

Try holding her tucked under one arm with your arm round her middle and her facing downward. It's not too uncomfortable for them and they can't wriggle out.

My DS was identical! I think it was his personality. He was always a bit averse to cuddles too at that stage but by the age of 2 was the opposite. I told him to hold onto me “like the koala in the video” and he figured it out from there. Obviously he was a lot older by then so had the understanding. I’m sure it will come in time!
