Morning everyone. Just looking for advice really. My 20 month old son is not saying any words at all and I'm just wondering if you guys had late talkers. Before his 18 month check he was saying about 5 words but he just refuses now. He'll shout 'Ma/Mum) at everybody but that's it. He understands everything we say to him and will carry out basic instructions but if I encourage him to say a word he shakes his head No. Or screams. The screaming is full on. Screams at everything, happy or angry doesn't really matter. Screams most of the day and some of it the highest, loudest screams I've heard. Even if he gets a toy he wants he then just screams in frustration. He seems so angry and frustrated all the time. He loves being outdoors and the fresh air and music really seems to calm him. I'm also considering if he's showing early signs of Autism but don't know if I'm overthinking things.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if it is a sign of autism, but if you want to check have a look at the M-Chat tool

It does sound like it could be frustration. I know that it's a bit of a cliche but have you tried using some signs with him? Big he can sign what he wants, like drink, eat, more etc he might not be so frustrated.

ICAN have sone useful tips on encouraging speech too it here's a progress checker for 24 months. Once he's reached that age I'd do it and see how he is, the progress checker should tell you if you need further assistance.

I wouldn't do the progress checker till he is 24 months though, a lot can happen in 4 months Smile
