Hiya

My son will be 2.5 in January 21. Currently he doesn't say any proper words. He knows exactly what everyone says. He makes plenty of different noises, gestures and points if needed to what he wants. He also makes a noise like wowww if he sees something he likes and another noise for something dirty sounds a bit like yuck. I don't think he has autism or any sort of special needs. The last time he was assessed by the health visitor they said 2 years 3 months is the cut off for speech. This was during the height of the lockdown and I haven't seen her since. I also presume there'll be a long wait for speech therapy. Has anyone else's child been like this? If so when did they start talking and was there any intervention needed? Sorry for long post. Thanks Smile

Can he follow instructions OP? Like...does he understand "Fetch teddy" or similar? My nephew took quite a long time to speak...he talks fine now he's 6. From memory, he wasn't talking really until over 3 years old.

Yes he does follow some instructions. Thank you for your reply it's just reassuring to hear that there are others out there who were late talkers too!

I'd be more concerned if he had trouble understanding instructions...but I wouldn't wait too long to ask for a referral. It can take ages to get an appointment...so if he starts talking before you get one you can just cancel it.

I'd talk to the HV again and ask for a hearing test. There's probably nothing wrong but SLat will want him to have had his hearing checked before they see him.

Have a look at the ICAN website too. They have progress checkers for speech and understanding and tips on how to help him Smile
