Is this normal? (Gender identity)

Is it normal for a 3 year old boy to say they are a girl? He doesn't do it off his own back it's only when I've asked him but he is insistent. He has many typical boy interests, he loves trains, cars, planes and running about generally being boisterous, although he does love playing with his teddies.
I was just wondering if this is a phase kids go through?
Thanks

My ds said he was a dog at that point. I wouldn't worry at all.

Why are you asking if he's a boy or girl? Leave it. My ds is teenage now and much as he might like to be a dog on school days I don't think he would still identify as one.

My 2.5 sometimes insists she's a boy but she also gets the genders of other people and children confused so I think she's just still getting to grups with what gender actually means. I wouldn't think anything of it at this age.

I insisted on being a (male) character out of a children's book. My brother insisted on being a female character out of the same book.
