Sudden bad stammer in 2.4 yo

My son, 2y4m, has suddenly developed a bad stammer over the last few days - it literally appeared overnight on Monday and has been really bad since. He stammers almost every sentence now, sometimes multiple times in each sentence.

I’ve had a look at old threads here and it seems to be that it can be a normal part of development for some toddlers and they mostly grow out of it. We’ve self referred to a SALT, so hoping to get an appointment soon, but I’ve been sitting here in tears as this afternoon there have been times where he has really struggled to get his sentence last out and it’s really breaking my heart.

I guess I’m looking for some positive stories for others whose toddlers have had this and whether and how it worked out. I am so worried, and I can’t work out if I’m being rationale or not at the moment, but really trying to stay positive for him as I don’t want him to pick up on my distress

My DD did this around the same age! It came on and off for a couple of months and then disappeared! It worried me and I did lots of googling, but I think it's just a case of the brain working too fast for them to get words out. Give it some time before panicking.

Ds1 had it just after he turned 2 and it come on and off until he was about 6. Had some speech therapy when he was 2 however at that age it’s more of a modelling from the parent as in don’t ask too many open questions, don’t finish their sentence, slow down while talking.
I was told some early talkers can get it before Their head is able to catch up with what they want to say. He is 11 now and no sign of it. Good luck

Hi,
I’ve just done a search and found this thread as I’m so concerned about my 3.3 year old. He started stuttering a few weeks back and in the last couple of days it’s got so bad and he is so very aware of it, getting really upset, frustrated and asking for help.

Have you noticed any change in you little boy? Where are you with the referral? It’s so worrying, isn’t it? I just hope it’s a case of brain needing to catch up and not something permanent
