Hi all, new here! I have a daughter who just turned 16 months and I have a few concerns - was hoping to receive some feedback from your experiences!

My daughter is very social with us and our families. She smiles and bolts for the door when someone arrives at our home, gestures to be picked up, shows us things, dances to her favorite songs (after yelling for our Alexa to play them!), points all day long, loves her little sister (will grab her bottle for her or pacifier when she cries), very easy going and go with the flow, great receptive language.

Overall, everyone is always commenting on how smart she is. My concerns are the following:

  • she’s such a silly girl, however when it comes time to take a photo, for example, she is suddenly very serious and doesn’t cooperate. Is this personality?
  • she is vocalizing all day long, letting us know she has needs, however she does not have a great vocabulary. We have heard mom, dad, amma for grandma, “attaahhhh” for Alexa, we sometimes here an approximation for elmo, and she moo’s for milk or when she sees a cow. My concern is that these aren’t super consistent. Is this normal?
  • to spin off of the concern above, she does not and has never really tried to mimic language. She will copy my actions, but never tries to make a sound after I make it or try to say a word that I say. She will just smile or move on to the next thing
  • she points, dances, gestures to be picked up, but is not yet waving bye. I’m trying to teach her but she’s not picking up on it.

Overall, I’m curious to see if you think these are just personality traits, or if they are concerning? Thanks Smile

It all sounds totally within the rhelms of normal to me. The photo taking I'm afraid is just behavioural and you may just have to be sneaky lol. Mine is the same. 16MO is very young ITO speech and I think in reality most kids aren't saying an awful lot at this age. It sounds like she has most of the precursors so I'd expect big explosions before she's 2 but otherwise not worry too much. If she really isn't saying anything more by 18MO or if she isn't speaking some simple sentences and plenty of words by 2 then I'd evaluate things again but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much and just give her time. She sounds lovely xx
