When did your child write their name?

At what age did your child write their name? My dd is 3.5 and isn't anywhere near writing their name yet. Can't even hold the pencil properly yet (she's learning but it's taking a bit of time.) But my friends dd is able to do it, she's a couple of months older.

I'm not concerned about my dd just wondering what other children have done as it seems like such a big difference in capability considering how close they are in age.

Hiya
My own daughter was 4 before she could write her name. She had zero interest and rubbish concentration. She's now almost 16 and excelling at school.

I am also a primary teacher. In the first year of school (age 4 and 5 in Scotland), about 80 per cent of kids come in able to write their name and the rest cannot. This does not have any direct correlation with their intelligence levels.

That's so interesting, thanks!

My son learnt when he started school at age 5. Is there any benefit in a 3 year old being able to write their own name?

My DD is in year 1. She has almost learnt to write the first half of her name (Its double barrelled) from memory. Still reverses some of the letters. Still needs a lot of encouraging to do so. Nowhere near on the second half and doesn't even know what her middle or surnames are. She has SEN that affect her reading and writing. They are all so different but at 3 its A while before you should be concerned.

Also my DD can wipe the floor in her class of 30 for maths ability and her fact recall. It's all swings and roundabouts.

My DD is four years and four months and it’s only just clicked for her in Reception. She definitely had neither the interest nor ability at 3.5. They change so much at this age.

I work in Early Years and can honestly say every child is different. I'd say the norm is around 4 years plus and even then they have to have a keen interest in writing to have the determination to write, its very hard! As all children have different interests and skills it really doesn't matter too much, school will teach them all they need to know. Early Years is most important to develop play and imagination, keep working on her fine motor skills to help improve her hand muscles 😊
