I just wanted to share my experience of infant gaviscon. Last week we took our 5 week old to the doctors as she was showing signs of colic, struggling to get wind up and wouldn't settle which is strange as all she loves to do is eat and sleep usually. Whilst at the doctors the gp asked if she was ever sick whilst feeding. I said no as she never usually is only when she's had infacol it sometimes brings abit of her feed up but more spit up not anything I would class as vomiting food back up, with this being said she then said our daughter could also have reflux, now I'm a new mum and didn't really know the signs of reflux so took her opinion as valid and used the infant gaviscon.
For 2 days our little girl has been terrible, a 5 week old who usually wolfs down 5oz went to a child who was taking 2oz at a push, wriggling around in discomfort whilst taking the feed and completely unsettled unless held in my arms. Took her off the gaviscon yesterday and stuck with just using infacol before her feeds and my god she's a different child to what I've experienced in the last 2 days. Back to eating 5oz every 3 hours and happily napping throughout the day like before.
Whilst going through all of this I rung nhs 111 and asked for advise, a doctor called me and said your child doesn't show signs of relux it's colic.
I think the gaviscon is out of her system now and she's back to normal so for any new mums prescribed gaviscon for infant and you experience this, take them off the gaviscon!
