Hello, my daughter has just turned 15 months old. She makes lots of different sounds but still doesn't say any words. She has said dog, cat and dada but she doesn't know what they mean. She doesn't really understand what I am saying.. For example, if I say point to the dog, she doesn't do it. Should I be worried?

I personally wouldn’t be worried. My DS didn’t say any words at 15 months either. He’s now 28 months and talking in sentences.

I think quite a lot of 15 month olds don't say any words yet, so I wouldn't worry about that (although I think a 'word' at that stage is any sound they use consistently for something, so if she regularly calls the dog 'ooga', that counts, even though it sounds very little like 'dog' or the dog's name).

Does she point to other things? To something she wants or to show you a dog/bird/car/bus/whatever she's seen? What about her understanding if it's something she's very likely to want to do? She may or may not feel like pointing at the dog, if you said 'let's have a biscuit' or another favourite food, would she go to where they're kept or to where she eats? Or to the door if you said 'let's go out in the garden/to the park'?

18 months is closer to when they learn words with context. My 15 month old just managed 'Hiya' with a wave but nothing else. She babbles a lot, which is good, she's practising.
