Hi, i have noticed twice in the past week dd has been playing with a good friend and another child tries to join in and dd and friend tell other child to go away cos they are too small, too slow etc.

she is only 3 1/2 but i really don't want her upsetting other kids. had a word with her but just want to know is this normal.

It is completely normal. Girls are more likely to do this and from a younger age ime.

You are right to have tald to her about it though.

mine is the other way around her older cousin was in her mixed reception and nursery class so all her friends were older. she once came home quite annoyed coz her friends had tried to carry her around, she was meant to be pretending to be a baby cat and she is not a baby cat!! but she got over it quickly and they were friends again the next day but she doesnt like playing with kids her own age or kids younger than her as they are not as advanced and spoil her games! maybe thats what was going on?

kids are resilliant im sure the younger child wont have been that bothered and yes i think its normal! kids can be really mean sometimes coz they dont know how to understand others feelings

Completely normal. As long as you explain why its not nice, you're doing it right. Sad to say, it will probably not sink in for many, many years though! My dd has just started secondary school and it seems to be going in now!

thanks all. when i listen in to her little playmobil games there seems to be alot of 'little girl politics' going on. i suppose it all part of growing up. i suppose it is an improvement on the thumping each other stage.

Sheherezade, my 3.10 yr old, when asked why she didn't play much with little boys at pre-school, said with great distaste: 'But Mummy, boys are scruffy and they play boy things'

I have to add that this is a trouser-loving, football-playing, little girl - albeit pink-loving in all things too

twos company threes a crowd with young girls i think! try and arrange it so just two of them each time

but i also think she is old enough to be told kindly that it is nice to play with all friends and how would she feel if noone would play with her - if shes old enough to tell another child not to play with them, she is old enough to hear this
