18 month old painfully shy

Hi,
Just putting another mummy post up here to see what thoughts and suggestions might come back.

My daughter is 18months old and is painfully shy. She is very comfortable and happy around family but if me and my husband meet up with friends , or if I have a little play date with another mummy friend and her little one, my daughter just hides ! She does eventually ease in to the situation if given the chance, e.g if our friends have the time to stay a bit longer and we act casually and not make too much eye contact or fuss of her, she will eventually come round a little bit.

Is this a common phase at this age? Or perhaps this could just be her own personality developing. Both me and my husband are very introverted, shy people so I wouldn't be surprised if this is her nature too. I just want to be able to support her in the right way and make sure she is comfortable in unfamiliar situations

It is perfectly normal, it's a scary world when you are that small. By not paying her any special she understands you are not concerned and can start to relax and slowly explore her surroundings.
