Is this normal? 16 month old tantrums

My 16 month old DD is having some awful tantrums lately over not being allowed things or being made to do things she doesn’t want to do. I know that part is a normal part of development, but I wanted some reassurance on how she behaves when she has them.

When she has a tantrum she will often hit her head with her own hands, headbutt me, bang her head against furniture or walls. It’s frightening and I’m always worried she is going to hurt herself. Of course I hold her tI stop her but it’s like that causes her even more upset sometimes as opposed to helping her calm down. Is this normal behaviour at this age? How do you lessen or stop it?

I have a 16 month old and have noticed it since last month with these tantrums. I'm guessing it's common. His bottom lips gets shaky and he starts slapping me or anything closer by when he can't get his way. I often pick him up and distract him with something else and it stops immediately. He hates the word no though and kicks off a lot. I'm dreading the terrible twos stage. Good luck op.
