One could have done toward the end of being 7 - the other would emerge from the shower after 5 hours having had some epic adventure with an army of imaginary friends and one sock still on her head.

Room tidying... let's just say we have different definitions of the word "tidy"

Interesting question!

  • shower yes (though he hates being alone so DH or I are always there, but he could do it, for sure); hair wash no.
  • fully get himself ready, yes, though will never brush his teeth unless basically forced to 🙄 So maybe that’s actually a no!
  • make themselves breakfast/a snack, yes. Although prefers someone else to do it!
  • put himself to bed, yes, but we like to put him to bed for stories, cuddles etc. He has put himself to bed on occasion when cross though! Also see above re teeth.
  • sleep all night in his own bed, yes! And has done for several years now (thank GOD. He was a terrible, terrible sleeper as a baby).
  • ride a bike, well he had just learned to do this at the end of last summer, but he he hasn’t had a bike since then. New bike arriving soon though so we’ll see if he can still manage it...
  • tidy room properly, yes, he’s actually pretty good at tidying.

DD at 7 (she’s now 11) could do all of these things apart from the hair wash (her hair is very long and very thick), but she is very independent-minded whereas DS likes his hand held even if he doesn’t need it...

Agreed, most of what you listed I would expect a typical 7 year old to be able to do.
