9 month old pulling himself up on cot

Hi All,

Our 9 month old son has started pulling himself up on his cot- it’s been lowered to its lowest setting already. The problem is when he’s standing he’s letting go and falling straight back and hitting his head 😔 he goes to sleep in a sleeping bag but he’s still managing it. Any ideas on what we can do?! Many thanks 😊

My son is 9 months old and is constantly standing up everywhere including the cot, we've had to put it on the lowest setting too as it looked like he was going to try and climb out!

The standing is gonna happen as they get closer to learning to walk. But it sounds like your son needs a bit of practice getting down again. It will come, but for now you may need to help him out a little bit. This video on YouTube is pretty good:

Mine is almost a year old and last couple of months has been a blur trying to stop him climbing out of his cot. I used to pick him up and lay him down - repeatedly.. it was so tiring but everytime he stood up I would lay him down. And say the word 'sleep' each time. After probably a million attempts, he started responding to the word 'sleep' and lays to put his cheek on the bed, for probably 10 seconds, but it's a start. Another thing that worked was putting his dummy/bed time toy on the bedding so he bends to pick it up and learns how to actually sit down. That did work quicker and he can now sit down and not try to jump out constantly. I hope this was a bit helpful.

Cots are great for pulling up on so often they do it just to practice this new skill. Try setting up lots of pulling up practice in the day, use the cot when you're trying not to sleep and hope he'll get bored of it to do it at night. He'll soon learn that you come back in if he stands up, so I'd be tempted to leave him to it and watch on the monitor or through door to check he's settling.
