Tantrums during the night? Help!

This is a new one for DS and I am baffled, I never realised this was a thing.

DS is almost 21 months old and woke up twice last night having what looked like full on tantrums. He was thrashing around, wouldn't let me pick him up, screaming, throwing his pillow around, hitting me and throwing his drink at me. Nothing I could do would console him. The first time was out of the blue and the second tantrum was because his white noise machine batteries ran out.

In the end DH (who had to be up at 5:30 for work) had to go in and calm him down.

He has always been a good sleeper, but I would say he has been waking in the night a lot more than usual lately. Normally just crying though, not angry like last night.

Please help, has anyone dealt with this before?

Are you sure it’s not night terrors? Usually they aren’t aware of what they’re doing but seem like they’re awake

@Dreamland13 I have been reading up on these night terrors today and u believe you're right, I think that's what he experienced last night.

My little one who is 3 has started having what I think are these mixed in with some growing pains, he thrashes about cries out, gets really upset, but unless it’s his Leg hurting we go in and most of the time he’s not with it at all. They say the best thing is to leave them but wait in the room and make sure they’re safe. But that’s easier said than done when they’re screaming!
