16 month old pinching, scratching, hair pulling

My DS is 16 months old and most of the time is a delightful, happy boy. But he has these weird episodes where he will look at me and randomly lash out and claw my face or neck, or pinch my skin and dig his nails in. He’ll also do on bare legs and arms. It’s getting more and more frequent and it’s made me bleed a couple of times. He doesn’t seem to do it in response to anything or when he’s frustrated, he just has this intent angry little look on his face as he’s doing it which would be quite comical if it didn’t hurt so much! If I am firm with him and change my tone of voice it just seems to make the situation worse and he will get angry and do it more. I have also tried not responding at all but it’s hard when it’s painful as I naturally yelp. He originally only did this to me but today he has also done it to his dad and my mum. He has made my mum’s face bleed! How is best to respond to this to make it stop happening?
