Cuddly toys essential?

My 1 year old son has a cuddly toy bunny which he's had since birth and sleeps with it most nights.
My husband seems to think that if I'd forgotten to put the bunny in our sons cot at night and he cries it's because he can't sleep without the bunny? He has been able to sleep without the bunny before and surely a 1 year old wouldn't have such a dependency?
What do you think? Are cuddly toys ESSENTIAL? Or do you think that kind of behaviour of 'forcing' a cuddly toy can provoke mental illness in later life? I might be completely overreacting I just think it's impossible for him not to be able to sleep without it.

It isn’t forcing it on him.
He’s had it since birth so it is likely he’s unsettled when it’s missing.
No him having it will not provoke mental illness later in life.
