tips for moving from grobag to duvet please

Am nervous that we'll end up with sleepless nights when we try to switch ds (17months) to duvet this weekend. Do you tuck it in at first to stop him getting cold? How long did your dc's take to work out they need to snuggle under?

Oh gawd am thinking exactly the same and mine is 3.2! He is now finaly too big for cot and tho still sleeps there happily have decided to move him to bed cos can hear him crashing against the sides in the night! So can't help really but would be interested in how it goes! Am going to try tucking in (and putting a spare matteress on the floor!) also I think a firm hand for wandering tots is needed (straight back into their bed) and a lot of patience!

we did this switch 3 weeks ago for 21 month old ds...absolutely no problems. We also switched to bed form a cot at same time...he just climbs in lies on front bum in the air and i pop the duvet over.

We put the duvet width ways accross the bed. then tuck it in under the mattress. It sort of meets in the middle. It works well as ds is not very tall so his feet don't stick out. Lots of my friends do this.

We found it went much better than I expected. A good big duvet helps - eg if you use a full size single duvet on a cotbed, then you can tuck it in more easily at the sides and tuck the foot end under the mattress to hold it in place (obviously so that it comes up to a safe chest level at the head end). DS does still thrash around and throw it off sometimes, but seems to stay asleep. Good snug-fitting pjs or an all-in-one sleepsuit help to avoid him getting a cold waist frompj top riding up - we got age 2-3 sleepsuits from M&S.

We did it with ds1 at 2.6 when he moved into a big bed. I was surprised at how well he took to the big bed and to the duvet. He had been in a grow bag since he was new born and I thought it might turn into a big battle but it was easy - no fuss at all. (And my ds1 makes a fuss whenever he can....)

ds stayed in his grobag in his toddler bed till he was 3.2.

I kept saying to him 'one day you'll be too big for this (it was aged 18-36m)grobag. And one day he woke up and and said 'Im too big for my zippy now' So we went and got a duvet that day.

did this 2 weeks ago, from cot to bed and from grobag to under duvet. Long sleepsuits seem to work.

Oh yes and don't forget to make a big deal out of it - big boy duvet, special big boy bed etc. DS really loves all that stuff and announces every morning that he has been in his big boy bed.

Yes misty, we were amazed! DS loved it from the start and only fell out twice, on the first night - one of those times, he didn't even wake up I was really surprised at how, after having rolled around in his cot so much that he frequently ended up with his face squished against the bars, he just seemed to adapt to a bed and knows how to stay in it.

Shoppingbags - have you moved your DS to a big bed then? My DS is 18m and still in cot with grobag but was wondering when best time to move him as we have already bought his bed and it is waiting in the loft for him.

thanks for so many helpful messages. He's still in a cot but we plan to move him into his toddler bed after Chrsitams and thought we'd go for a gradual change by doing the duvet thing first. Have bought lovely snuggly pj's and will put vest under to avoid gap around the midrift. Think I might go back in after he falls asleep to put duvet on as I think he wriggles a lot in the few minutes between putting him down and him nodding off.

If you have an 0.5 tog summer grobag, try using it and the duvet together for a couple of nights to get him used to having the duvet - worked for us.

that's a good idea. We have a sheet grobag which just fits him. Duvet is on bed this morning ready for tonight's first attempt. Seems like a rite of passage

We use heavy pjs (with a vest if it's really suddenly cold and our heating hasn't caught up) but then it gets too hot under a duvet so when it's not very cold we use one or two cotton cot blankets instead. Dd is 26 mo and will generally say which she wants and whether it is 'too much cosy warm'. We moved to the cot bed and duvet when she turned 2 in July.
