Whining in 2.3 year old

Ugh my ds (2.3) is so whiny at the moment! He uses a sort of whiny cry as a way of communicating/ getting my attention and it sounds awful!!! A sort of 'arrrrh' and pointing strategy when he wants something, needs help with something etc.

I am trying to say 'please tell me in words' and 'big boys use words' etc. but it is hard work as he seems to have got into quite a habit of whining. Have also tried saying 'I just don't understand when you whine.'

Any other tips/ strategies?

My DS2, just turned 4 this month, does that and he speaks very well so there are no excuses for that awful whinging noise at all. Drives you mad doesn't it - worse than finger nails down a blackboard!

The only way I have of dealing with it is to tell him to use words and then ignore him until he decides to communicate properly. Sometimes it works.

Oh no, that means i have years of this ahead of me!! I do find he is worse if he's tired or not feeling well.

It is indeed a horrid noise and it also makes him sound so spoilt to other people I think.

I hope your DS grows out of it before he is 4. TBH I think my DS has only developed this particular whine in the last 6 months. Usual story I suppose - they all do things at slightly different rates - I just hope he gets over it soon!

In case anyone else is dealing with this - I think we've made some progress...I actually did an impression of ds's whinging and said to him 'do you think it sounds nice?' and he said 'no' ...we had a little conversation about it all and now I keep saying 'stop whining it would sound much nicer if you asked in words like a big boy'

Maybe it's got through to him a little bit...
