How much does your breastfed baby poop?

Mine used to be once or twice a day, then when he hit 4 months he started going loads and was way more explosive sounding. Often really liquidy too. Maybe 5 times a day and since 5 months every morning loads and loads of yellow liquid. He is six months next week and we are waiting to start solids then. I'm just wondering if I should check that this is all normal before we bring solids into the mix! HV line is always so busy, but I will try on Monday if the responses make me think it's a necessity!

Points are:

  • Never touched anything but breastmilk
  • Can be a bit grumpy but also terrible sleeper so often linked to this (I hope!)
  • I have some dairy but not loads. I don't eat milk. I have one small cup of coffee I drink half of each morning. Diet related I'm not sure what else might contribute?

I don't eat meat! But it's also true my only dairy intake is cheese and not daily.
I do have chocolate..

He seems generally well and lots of wet nappies despite the constant poop. Oh but he goes after feeding pretty much instantly!

I think it's well within the range of normal. Some BF babies go every 2 weeks and sone go with every feed.

Is there a reason that you mention the dairy you eat?

Thanks! I just wondered if maybe it was allergy related?

I also don't get why it changed at 4 months.

If it was an allergy, you'd usually get a lot of wind, farting, discomfort, mucus in the poo and possibly a swollen tummy.

HistoryHeroes · 24/04/2020 21:25

His poo is quite mucusy and there is a lot of wind. He can fuss a lot! Plus he has eczma.

Ok, in that case have a read of this from Allergy UK.

Do any of the symptoms sound familiar?

This article from Kellymom is pretty good too Smile

Could it be teething?
My daughter is 9months now but probably about 4months she started pooing up to 10 times a day and often more during the night. Hers also had mucous in and sometimes a little blood ( which we got checked out)
No one was concerned as she wasn't dehydrated.
Starting solids didn't make it worse. She goes through stages of pooing more when teething but not as bad as the first time.

I’d also say teething, my little one goes pretty much after every feed recently and she’s just turned 5 months. It’s always lovely bright yellow too 😆
