Is it appropriate to spank your child if they are misbehaving? I am obviously not violent but is it the only thing that will make them learn? HmmFeedback is welcome

No. All it teaches them anything other than to be violent.

It is violence and it just teaches children that it's Ok to hurt someone who displeases you.

Children learn best from natural consequences, e.g. you need to stop playing because you got too excited and hit x.
