My 19 month old will sometimes wake up in a full state of hysteria, throwing himself around the cot, screaming, hitting me, throwing himself backwards and it can take a good 15 minutes before he snaps out of it. I'm really worried if anyone has any advice or can even give me an insight as to why this can be happening. He also has a baby sister who he will randomly try to slap on the head or bite out of nowhere

The sleep thing sounds very much like night terrors (Google it, the NHS has a page on it). These are quite common in children and not harmful, although it looks scary.

The slapping and biting is just his age and probably a bit of jealousy!
